Benjamin Mendy takes Manchester City to Court

Benjamin Mendy takes Manchester City to Court over unpaid salaries during his two-year legal battle.

Manchester City will appear in court in October, after its former player Benjamin Mendy sued the club in the employment tribunal for unpaid wages during his trial.

After two years of legal battles, Benjamin Mendy was acquitted of all allegations against him, including multiple counts of rape and attempted rape, at Chester Crown Court in the United Kingdom. The trials had initially led to his suspension from Manchester City who also seized from paying his wages since September 2021.

A year has now gone by since the Frenchman’s innocent verdict, Benjamin Mendy‘s lawyers will now pursue a very winnable case against Manchester City, who have failed to honour the agreement on the player’s contract, while showing him no support during his tough period.

Benjamin Mendy, who joined Manchester City from AS Monaco in the summer of 2017 as one of the most expensive defenders in the world, had a contract until 2023 at the time of his arrest, but the club would not pay him for almost the final two years of it.

The legal team of the now Lorient man argues that the suspension did not justify the club’s decision to stop paying his wages, given that he was ultimately found not guilty. The unpaid wages in question reportedly amount to millions of euros, highlighting the financial stakes of the tribunal.

Mendy was entitled to €90,000 per week on his contract. Manchester City failed to pay for almost 21 months. Their court appearance next month will be a significant moment in the saga, with both Mendy and the club eager to resolve this contentious dispute once and for all.

Benjamin Mendy takes Manchester City to Court

30-year-old Mendy made 75 Manchester City appearances between 2017 and 2021. He scored two goals and 12 assists. The FIFA World Cup winner won three Premier League titles, two Carabao and one Community Shield titles during his time at the club.

Benjamin Mendy takes Manchester City to court knowing he has a very strong case, even so after his vindication of all accusations. Manchester City however, should their fear of losing the legal battle come to life, a potential tribunal judgement will definitely impact how the club, and possibly others, approach player contracts in the context of criminal investigations in the future.
